What Every Woman Should Have: Some Ideas for International Women's Day

Perhaps as lead-up to International Women’s Day on the weekend, a friend recently sent around a long list of things that a woman should have. Some of them were funny and a couple were wise. Here are a few that caught my fancy:

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ......
enough
money within her control to move out
and rent a place of her own,
even if she never wants to or needs to...

A WOMAN SHOULD
HAVE .
a youth she's content to leave behind....

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .
a past
juicy enough that she's looking forward
to retelling it in her old age....

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...
a set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and...
a black lace bra...

I think I like the last one the best, although I must admit I’m never had any of the three. Perhaps I should go shopping for them this week. A way to stimulate the economy?

Thanks to Élisabeth Humbolt-Lapointe pour the list.

I don't know whether I have a proper "set" of screwdrivers - do they have to match? Certainly own different sizes and end-types. Drill, yep. Black lace bra, yep.

And I think "youth she's content to leave behind" can be interpreted in many ways, some felicitous, others rather sad.

Of course, I also think she should have a bicycle!

I think a woman should have enough love in her heart to spread it around like a refreshing rain on a hot summer day. I think she already has it actually...

I am not very into these "x days". I think women, like men, should be celebrated every day. But don't get me wrong, I understand why it exists, although I wished it didn't have to... can't erase the past, can we, but we surely can act on the present for a better future (cheesy maybe, but it is something I like to believe in).

And I agree for the bicycle.

Oh, you ambitious and brave ladies: bicycles! I'll take a good pair of walking shoes or boots, being an abject coward when it comes to bikes.

Maria, when it comes to youth, I think that one of teh advantages of growing older is realizing that there's much wisdom in saying "been there, done that," no matter what "that" might be. Remember we're getting better and wiser all the time!

And Patricia, I love what you say: "a woman should have enough love in her heart to spread it around like a refreshing rain on a hot summer day." The same goes for men, too, although as a group they seem to have a much harder time admitting how much they care.

Have a great weekend. Be careful on the bikes.

Yes, that could be a positive interpretation of being content to leave youth behind. As long as it doesn't mean becoming fearful and unable to change, as alas it does for many people (though perhaps that is more common among men than women).

Oh, I have walking shoes too - some great German ones from Josef Siebel - but the bicycle is like flying, and the rotating exercise is particularly good for arthritic joint pain.

And since I'm just back from Amsterdam, bicycles rule! (Though of course not lycra louts who terrorise pedestrians and slower cyclists).
